How time tracking works
What a time entry records, how it's reviewed, and how it connects to the rest of Ranes.
A time entry starts when someone taps in and ends when they tap out. Each entry belongs to a job and records what kind of work it was.
What each entry records
| Detail | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Job | Chosen when tapping in. |
| Time category | The kind of activity, chosen when tapping in or taken from a planner task. |
| Cost code | Chosen from the job's cost codes. |
| Start and end | When they tapped in and out, with location where available. |
| Fit for duty | Their answer when tapping in. |
| Notes and concerns | Anything added at tap in or tap out, including reported incidents. |
| Review status | Pending, Approved or Denied. |
Shifts and activities
Entries with a time category track a specific activity, such as travel or setup. Entries without one record a whole shift. In the Portal you can filter to either.
Review
New entries are Pending until a supervisor approves or denies them. Approved and denied entries can be reopened if something needs another look. See Review and approve time.
How time connects
- Required forms can stand between someone and tapping in. See Require checks before people tap in.
- Planner tasks let people tap in without leaving the planner. See Track time on a task.
- Tapping out asks about concerns, so issues get reported at the end of every shift. See Wrap up your shift.
- Hours roll up by job, time category and cost code. See Hours summaries, the map and the timeclock report.
